The mountain landscape of Oberammergau, which today is mostly known for its tradition-steeped attractions such as wood carving and the passion play performed every 10 years, was already a popular travel destination for the “Fairy Tale King” Ludwig II back in the 19th century.
He contributed to the beauty and harmony of the Ammertal area by extending his father’s hunting lodge in the forest into one of the most magnificent castles, although it was the only one completed in his lifetime.
Linderhof Palace, the summer residence of King Ludwig II, which is about one hour’s drive away, is well worth the trip. In its picturesque location at the foot of the Oberammergau mountains, the castle garden in particular creates an unforgettable impression.
Pilgrimage Church of Wies
To finish off this cultural excursion through the Ammergau region, why not visit the Pilgrimage Church of Wies?
The old town of Füssen, home to St. Mang’s Abbey, Hohes Schloss castle, and a town museum, is also in a very picturesque location.
Right near Linderhof Palace you’ll also find Ettal Abbey, which was founded in 1330.
